Twitter is getting into video games, but in a very unexpected way.
Steam sells games to make a profit, Netflix offers games as an added bonus for paying subscribers, but Twitter made a game to help us understand its privacy policy.
It's called Twitter Data Dash, and it's a 2D platformer played in a web browser. The game is set in PrivaCity and tasks the player with navigating a dog called Data safely to the park. Along the way players must "dodge cat ads, swim through a sea of DMs, battle trolls, and learn how to take control of your Twitter experience along the way."
Each level sees you navigate a different environment collecting bones along the way. Once all bones are collected, a message pops up containing easy to digest Twitter tips like the one you see above about direct messages.
Nobody enjoys reading a privacy policy, and the majority of people don't even bother because they are usually full of legal speak it's very hard to parse. Playing a game is easy to entice someone to do, even if the experience admittedly isn't that memorable.
Twitter is keen to point out that no data is collected while you play Data Dash, and you may want to take a quick look at the privacy policy once you've completed the game. It's actually one of the clearer policies I've seen in terms of layout and information, and it covers the latest version of Twitter's policies which come into affect on June 10.
