That Nicole Kidman Oscars Reaction Image Was Not About Will Smith & Chris Rock
After recent confirmation from the image's photographer, it has been revealed that the now-infamous image of Nicole Kidman appearing surprised at the Oscarsactually had nothing to do with the Will Smith and Chris Rock fiasco. After several years of the ceremony's ratings seemingly plummeting, the explosive 2022 event featured a wide variety of iconic moments that are sure to go down in its history. On the night of this year's ceremony, the most infamous of events that occurred would have to be the altercation between Best Actor winner, Will Smith, and comedian, Chris Rock.
The night saw Rock poke fun at Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, for her shaved head, seemingly unaware that the actress suffers from alopecia, resulting in Smith slapping the comedian across the face right on stage. While some have taken the event as a serious issue, others have taken to social media to find the comedy in the situation, resulting in a plethora of memes. One of these humorous photos appeared to show Kidman looking shocked at the events unfolding on stage.

In an exclusive interview with Los Angeles Times (viaVulture), photographer Myung Chun, who took the original photo of Kidman, revealed the image's true context. He revealed that the photo portrayed a moment during the commercial break of the actress appearing extremely excited to see fellow actress, Jessica Chastain, across the room.
