Over the weekend, Netflix capitalized on one of the most well-known horror movie franchises with Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2022, and various callbacks and Easter eggs are scattered throughout the movie. The film is a direct sequel to the original 1974 movie The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Thankfully for audiences who may be unfamiliar with all eight of the previous entries, the new Texas Chainsaw timeline only inserts the first movie into its canon. However, the new release does make a point to pay respect to the rest of the series and the director’s previous work.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre is Director David Blue Garcia’s sophomore production. He has previously worked as a cinematographer for various films and TV series. However, his only other directing credit is for 2018’s Tejano, which also receives several references throughout his newest project. The cast for Texas Chainsaw 2022 is primarily stocked with lesser-known actors, but viewers might be glad to see Sally Hardesty once again – this time played by Olwen Fouéré. The new Leatherface is played by Mark Burnham who is new to the character but matches his mannerisms well, making the idea that he is a Leatherface nearly five decades into the future believable.

The movie doesn’t explicitly acknowledge its seven other predecessors, but eagle-eyed audiences and those who pay enough attention will notice multiple references to outside films including some of the other Texas Chainsaw films the 2022 Netflix original ignores.
