A new behind-the-scenes video from the set of Stranger Things season 4reveals the practical suit Jamie Campbell Bower wore to portray Vecna. Matt and Ross Duffer’s supernatural homage to the ‘80s has seen Eleven and the inhabitants of Hawkins combat Demogorgons, Demodogs, and the Mind Flayer throughout its first three seasons. Following a nearly-three-year hiatus, season 4 of the series dropped on Netflix last month and introduced audiences to a game-changing big bad in Vecna.
Inspired by classic villains like Freddy Krueger and named after the Dungeons & Dragons spellcasting monster, Vecna invades the minds of his victims and preys on latent guilt before twisting their bodies into human pretzels. While his baritone voice may sound like Freddy Krueger himself, Robert Englund (who stars as Victor Creel in the series), the character is actually portrayed by Bower. In stark contrast to his role as the “Friendly Orderly,” he wore pounds of prosthetics to stalk Chrissy, Fred, and Max.

In a recent interview during Netflix’s Geeked Week, Stranger Things’ cast reacted to the scene from episode 4, “Dear Billy,” in which Max escapes Vecna in his mind lair thanks to Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill.” After the said reaction, viewers are shown behind-the-scenes footage of Bower wearing the villain’s practical suit.
