It's been a good few months since various video game developers announced that they will be delving into the blockchain side of things for upcoming projects. However, after severe public backlash, many of them have either quietly withdrawn their plans, or decided never to bring up the topic again. However, Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda, is still going on about his "play to earn" nonsense.
This time it was in an interview with Yahoo Japan (thanks, VGC), where he said that relying on traditional games will no longer be enough for Square Enix.
"In the future, we would like to try our hand at providing ‘autonomous game content’,” said Matsuda. "Until now, in most games, we provided the content as a finished product and the players played that content. However, there are a certain number of players in the world who want to contribute to making games more interesting, by creating new settings and ways of playing.”

He went on to say that Square Enix would want to call upon these creators who will build games that will continue to change and evolve over time. “If, instead of relying on goodwill, we can also provide incentives to those who contribute to development by utilising technologies such as blockchain, there is a possibility that innovative and interesting content can be created from the ideas of users,” he added.
This speil is slightly different from what Matsuda had been propagating earlier. While this time he mentioned something about "autonomous game content," in the past he had said "there will be a certain number of people whose motivation is to “play to contribute,” by which I mean to help make the game more exciting."
