Sons of the Forest, the anticipated sequel to 2014’s The Forest has been delayed. The title’s developer, Endnight Games, announced that their original May 2022 date was “overly ambitious.” Now, the developer says that the game will release in October 2022. The announcement doesn’t share much more information beyond that and a small set of clips from the upcoming game.
It’s bound to be disappointing news for those who have been eagerly awaiting the game, and it stings even more since this isn’t the first time the game has been delayed. In fact, its development cycle seems like it has been a bit rocky, as the game was first announced at The Game Awards in 2019. Still, it’s good to see that Sons of the Forest is on its way, even if we have to wait a little longer.
The bits that we’ve seen from Sons of the Forest do look impressive in their own right. It seems to be doubling down on many of the aspects that made its predecessor stand out. The first thing that comes to my mind is the more horror-oriented approach to the survival genre. For example, the first game made you trek through various pitch-black caves and deal with cannibalistic foes around every corner. Here, these scenarios look to be even more chilling, with new grotesque enemies to encounter and darker places to explore.
Sons of the Forest‘s previous trailer highlighted many of these aspects while also showing off some newer additions like the shotgun, which is an especially welcome weapon for fending off whatever lurks in the game’s many caves. The bottom line is that Sons of the Forest looks to be just as nerve-wracking as the first game. And though much of it looks very similar, the small additions that they’ve shown off could be just enough.
