Return to Monkey Island will be released for Nintendo Switch and PC in 2022.
The title was featured in a Nintendo Direct presentation on Tuesday, and a new gameplay reveal trailer is viewable below.
In a press release, Nintendo said the game is “launching first for consoles on Nintendo Switch later this year”.
Announced in April, Return to Monkey Island is a follow up to the acclaimed adventure game series led by original writer and director Ron Gilbert.
Gilbert’s Terrible Toybox studio is making the game in collaboration with Devolver Digital and Lucasfilm Games.
The game’s debut trailer confirmed that Dave Grossman, co-writer and programmer on the original Monkey Island games, will also be returning, alongside composers Michael Land, Peter McConnell and Clint Bajakian, and Dominic Armato as the voice of Guybrush.
Although Return to Monkey Island is technically the sixth game in the Monkey Island series, it’s only the third to be led by Gilbert and Grossman, and is therefore being presented as a sequel to Monkey Island 2.
“It’s been many years since Guybrush Threepwood was last locked in a battle of wits with his nemesis, the zombie pirate LeChuck,” reads the blurb accompanying Tuesday’s gameplay reveal video.
“His true love, Elaine Marley, has turned her focus away from governing and Guybrush himself is adrift and unfulfilled, having never found the Secret of Monkey Island.
