The narrative of Pokémon Legends: Arceus is filled with memorable characters, including Volo of the Gingko Guild. Many of these new people are ancestors of characters in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, which means players can piece together the mysteries of what happened to them after Legends: Arceus' true ending. Volo's fate is left largely unexplained, but there are subtle hints that point toward what happened to him.

When players first meet Volo in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, he's a wondering merchant with the Gingko Guild. He seems passingly interested in the protagonist, but outside of appearing at a few odd times, there's nothing early on to suggest he's more than a friendly face. As the story progresses, however, it quickly becomes apparent that Volo isn't just a merchant — and that he may have some ulterior motives for helping players out.

All of this comes to a head in the post-game once credits have rolled. In the lead-up to Pokémon: Legends: Arceus' true ending, Volo reveals that he's behind the strange happenings in Hisui in an attempt to conquer Arceus. Finally revealed as the true villain, Volo summons Giratina and players must fight both of them in order to save the world. After this, Volo escapes — but not before declaring that he'll do whatever it takes to find Arceus, even if it means waiting centuries.
After fighting Volo, players must "meet every Pokémon" in Legends: Arceus' Pokédex before being able to meet Arceus by playing the Azure Flute. Along the way, they'll encounter Professor Laventon, who mentions that Volo stopped by and was helping behind the scenes. Laventon says
