Listings on PlayStation Direct show that while official PS5 console covers are available to purchase from Sony, other retailers will receive stock a little later than anticipated. Sony finally unveiled PS5 faceplates in December 2021, promising a PlayStation Direct release for January 2022. Meanwhile, other retailers around the globe were poised to begin selling the long-awaited PS5 accessories on February 18.
The saga surrounding PS5 faceplates seems never-ending. Within hours of the hardware's 2020 reveal, the internet was abuzz with customization possibilities for potential console covers. Several third-party accessory manufacturers quickly jumped on board, announcing future plans in absence of Sony stepping out in front of the hype train itself. As many may recall, the likes of CMP Shells and Dbrand became embroiled in a legal tussle with the hardware manufacturer about the sale of PS5 covers. While the PS5 faceplate legal battles seem to have drawn to a close, Sony now finds itself combating another beast — supplying its global retail partners with the necessary stock.

As spotted by VGC, updates to the PS5 console cover listings on PlayStation Direct note the accessories will be "available elsewhere" starting March 31. Web archives through the Wayback Machine show the very same listings previously read "available 2/18 elsewhere" as of January 29, 2022. Thus, while consumers can still purchase the colored faceplates through PlayStation Direct, Sony has quietly delayed their release at other retailers around the globe.
