The Legend of Zelda franchise has a tendency to reuse items in games, and Ocarina of Time's Mask of Truth is the most disappointing iteration of its kind. Given the name of the item and the amount of work that Link has to be in before he earns the Mask of Truth, players would expect that the mask leads to a hidden treasure or unravels some mysteries within Hyrule. Instead, the Mask of Truth in Ocarina of Time is a disappointingly useless item.
Ocarina of Time takes place in Hyrule, a land under the threat of a dark future, but only a handful of characters recognize the danger that's coming. Link is tasked with collecting spirit stones and opening the door to the Sacred Realm, where the Triforce is sealed, before Ganondorf opens it. Ganondorf exploits this plan, takes the Triforce, and Link is sealed in the Sacred Realm for years. Once he returns to Hyrule, Link embarks on a journey to gather items and allies that he'll need in order to defeat Ganondorf.
