August is almost here, which means a whole new slate of shows and movies to watch on HBO Max. Some of the content is available starting on August 1, while other shows and movies will be available a little later next month.
Easily, the biggest highlight of the month is House of the Dragon, coming to HBO Max on August 21. Although the series has the unenviable task of escaping the divisive shadow of Game of Thrones' final season, the good news is this show represents a clean slate for the franchise and can hopefully turn the tides for all the other spin-offs in the works. Ahead of Comic-Con this week, HBO released the first trailer--which was a back-to-basics brutal display of violence, scheming, and dragons. The show is based on George RR Martin's 2018 novel, Fire & Blood, adapting the early history of the Targaryens and their infamous civil war. Here's hoping the prequel series will be a decent reset and an overdue course correction for the adapted Game of Thrones universe.
If high-fantasy prequels are your jam, then you can keep the party going on August 25 with The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Extended Version. After the rousing success that was the Lord of the Rings film trilogy, director Peter Jackson followed that up with a Hobbit trilogy that proved to be not as much of a success--though also not without its charms or fans. The Desolation of Smaug is the second installment in this prequel trilogy, and follows Bilbo Baggins as he accompanies Thorin Oakenshield and his fellow dwarves on a quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain from the dragon Smaug. It's not a bad idea to gear up for the coming Prime Video series Lord Of The Rings: Rings Of Power, which comes to that service on September 2, and
