Elon Musk should ensure the World Food Programme receives the promised funds before using an outstanding $44 billion to take Twitter private. Twitter accepted an offer from Elon Musk, the CEO of both Tesla and SpaceX, that will make the tech mogul the sole owner of the social media company for an acquisition price of $44 billion. Musk began to acquire shares in the network as early as January 2022, and has proposed a plan to produce the billions of dollars needed to purchase Twitter that includes cash, loans, and debt that would be tied to the company. All the while — as the investor has moved funds, stock, and capital with perceived ease — the World Food Programme has yet to see the $6 billion donation Musk promised last year.
The World Food Programme detailed a plan to assist 42 million people in more than 4o countries around the world on Nov. 3, 2o21. It fulfilled an ultimatum issued by Musk days earlier: if the organization showed how it would fight world hunger, the billionaire would fund the project. The proposal centered around aiding the people that were most vulnerable, and was oriented towards people who suffered from 'emergency' and 'catastrophe' levels of food insecurity, as defined by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification. The release noted exactly where the donation would be spent, for what purposes, and in some cases explained how the investment would stifle world hunger. Although Musk pledged to immediately sell his stock in Tesla to make the donation, it was anything but expedited — and the organization still hasn't seen a dime from the chief executive.
