Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 continues to be the fastest-selling entry in the long-running shooter series, according to publisher Activision.
Having topped $800 million in sales in its first three days of availability, the game crossed the $1 billion mark in 10 days.
In doing so it surpassed the record previously held by 2012’s Black Ops 2, which took 15 days to reach $1 billion in sales.
Activision said over 200 million hours were spent playing over one billion Modern Warfare 2 matches across PlayStation, Xbox and PC platforms in the game’s first 10 days.
“The incredible momentum driving Modern Warfare 2 is a direct reflection of the energy and passion of the Call of Duty community,” said Call of Duty general manager Johanna Faries.
“As we look ahead to an unprecedented level of support for Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2.0’s launch next week, we are motivated to deliver again for the best player community in the world.”
While not officially confirmed, it’s been claimed that Activision doesn’t intend to release a new mainline Call of Duty game in 2023, essentially skipping a year for the first time in two decades.
The company stated in August that Call of Duty will receive “new premium content” in 2023, and it’s been claimed that this will come in the form of a Modern Warfare 2 campaign expansion and a ‘greatest hits’ pack containing multiplayer maps from a variety of classic Call of Duty games.
Modern Warfare 2’s first season of live content will launch on November 16 alongside the free-to-play Warzone 2.0.
