Nikki Blonsky, star of the 2007 movie Hairspray, has revealed she is working on a screenplay, and it may be a musical. Blonsky’s breakout role was as Tracy Turnblad in Hairspray, working alongside stars like Zac Efron and John Travolta. For her performance, Blonsky won two Critics’ Choice Awards, and the film had a platinum-selling soundtrack. A critical and financial success, Hairspray remains one of the most beloved musical adaptations of the past several decades.
Hairspray was based on the Tony Award-winning 2002 Broadway musical, which itself was based on John Waters' 1988 film of the same name. The story focuses on Tracy's dreams of starring on the popular dance program The Corny Collins Show, though they soon become entangled with the greater issue of racial segregation. Alongside an impressive ensemble cast, Blonsky brought Tracy's energy and passion to vivid life. Since then, she has starred in the then-ABC Family series Huge as main character Willamena Rader and held a recurring role on the NBC show Smash.
