Ford Reveals First Electric Pickup Truck for Police
Ford today unveiled the F-150 Lightning Pro Special Service Vehicle—an electric pickup truck purpose-built for the police.
Alongside the usual vehicular suspects—heavy-duty cloth seats, built-in steel intrusion plates, roof-mounted LED warning beacons—drivers can tap into high-tech features(Opens in a new window) like a mobile power source that lights up night-time crime scenes, an electric powertrain aimed at reducing fuel and maintenance costs, and a front trunk with an additional 14.1 cubic feet of lockable storage.
The F-150 Lightning Pro SSV(Opens in a new window) seats five and is designed for more than high-speed pursuits (though it does include sub-four-second zero-to-60 mph acceleration). This EV can handle situations like assisting at an accident or towing a boat or trailer. A standard battery provides 452 horsepower and 775 lb.-ft. of torque, 7,700 pounds of towing capacity, and a 2,235-pound max payload; while an extended-range battery offers 580 horsepower and 10,000-pound tow capacity.
The targeted zero-emissions police truck comes pre-configured to seamlessly connect to a department's existing fleet of vehicles (be they battery-powered or gas-guzzlers), chargers, and management software in an effort to lower operating costs and improve uptime.
Ford counts more than 12,000 US police departments among its customers and has been providing law enforcement with vehicles for over 70 years. "We're proud to offer America's first electric police pickup truck to local government customers who can use the truck's game-changing technology to help improve their productivity," Nate Oscarson, Ford Pro national government sales manager, said in a statement.
