Indian car manufacturer Mahindra announced its newest venture in the EV market at a special event on Independence Day. The company announced its Born Electric vision under which it announced 5 upcoming EVs for the Indian market. 3 of the EVs will be sold under the new Born Electric sub-brand and 2 will be sold under the Mahindra badge. All of these EVs will be underpinned by Mahindra's new platform called INGLO.
Now, it has reportedly been confirmed that one of the electric SUVs, named Mahindra XUV400 is scheduled to launch in September, according to AutocarIndia. The XUV400 is expected to be an electric version of the current compact SUV, the XUV300.
Dr Anish Shah, Managing Director & CEO, Mahindra Group, said, “We are proud and delighted to showcase our Born Electric vision. It provides a strategic direction that is in line with our core philosophy of ‘Rise' – to be an organisation that will be counted among the best in the world and at the same time rise for our planet to fight against climate change. Mahindra will offer customers future-ready technology, head-turning design, world-class products and the benefits of global partnerships. By 2027, we expect that a quarter of the SUVs we sell will be electric.”
However, unlike the XUV300 which is a sub-4-meter car due to excise duty benefits, the XUV400 is expected to be a little longer.
This is not Mahindra's first venture into the EV business. In fact, Mahindra launched India's first ever electric sedan, the e-Verito. Mahindra overtook the sales and services of the Reva, India's first ever EV.
The Mahindra XUV400 will be launched as a direct rival to the Tata Nexon, which continues to lead the charts for EV sales in India. The XUV400 has already been spied testing on roads.
