Solo developer Aaron McDevitt has launched a Kickstarter campaign for Aero GPX, an anti-gravity racing game inspired by Nintendo‘s classic F-Zero series.
The Kickstarter campaign launched on Tuesday alongside a Steam demo for the game, and at the time of publishing it has raised £18,000 of its £64,000 goal, which must be met by November 17 for the title to be funded.
Should it reach its initial funding goal, Chicago, Illinois-based McDevitt aims to release the game for PC by March 2024, but he’d like to bring it to consoles too depending on how much money can be raised.
Aero GPX’s primary inspirations are F-Zero X and F-Zero GX, while Wave Race 64 and Kirby Air Ride are also listed as significant inspirations.
McDevitt describes himself as a “solo game developer” who’s “been making game modifications and hobby game development projects for around 15 years”.
“Aero GPX is an anti-gravity racer focused on high velocity, flight, machine-to-machine combat, and responsive controls that are simple to pick up but difficult to master,” according to its Kikckstarter description.
“There are 30 machines on the circuit for each race in Aero GPX; and the race ends with significantly less than that. Pilots fight for the best position possible with blistering speeds, risky maneuvers, and visceral attacks. While Aero GPX is inspired by classics in the genre, it has a few twists of its own to feel like a new experience with hints of nostalgia.”
Nintendo’s F-Zero series launched in 1990 for the SNES and the most recent entry was 2004’s GBA game F-Zero Climax.
F-Zero X, the second game in the series, was added to Switch Online’s Nintendo 64 collection in March.
