The Dark Moon Ring is a very important item in Elden Ring that is needed to complete the questline of Ranni the Witch. Acquiring it requires players to visit a familiar locale halfway through Ranni's Questline, which is hinted at by Ranni's «final» gift to the player at that point. Ranni's Questline grants access to several very useful and powerful items, an alternate ending, and even a nod to FromSoftware's previous titles.

The Ring itself is located somewhere most players will be very familiar with, but a special key is required before it can be acquired. The Discarded Palace Key is acquired as a reward from Ranni the Witch during her questline. Players will need to progress Ranni's questline until they retrieve the Cursemark of Death from atop the Divine Tower of Liurna (which itself requires the Inverted Statue acquired from retrieving the Fingerslaying Blade for Ranni).
After acquiring the Cursemark of Death a change occurs in the Liurna region, as the barrier blocking access to Renna's Rise disappears.
