Electronic Arts has detailed Battlefield 2024’s long-awaited 3.2 update, which will introduce a class-based system.
Developer DICE announced last August that it was planning to rework the game’s “polarising” Specialists system to bring it closer to something that would be more familiar to players of previous series entries.
The new system, which is detailed here, lets users play as the Assault, Engineer, Recon and Support classes. Classes can be customised with equipment, gadgets and weapon proficiencies.
Next week’s update also introduces a reworked version of the Breakaway map, which has been “streamlined and reduced in size to encourage more intensive encounters than you have previously experienced”.
New Vault Weapons, which are weapons previously available only in Battlefield Portal that can be accessed in All-Out Warfare once unlocked, include the M39 EMR, MTAR-21 and PP-2000.
There’s a new suppressor and scopes too, among other features included in the update (see the full patch notes).
“Update 3.2.0 is a major moment for the team as we have worked on the Return to the Class System for Battlefield 2042, alongside many other changes and improvements,” DICE said.
“You’ve told us how you’d like to see gameplay evolve and we’re extremely excited to get those changes into your hands.”
Battlefield 2042 Season 3 launched last November, when the game was also added to the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and EA Play subscription services.
DICE recently revealed the first Battlefield 2042 season 4 and 5 details.
Season 4 will include a new Specialist in the Recon class and a new map designed for close-quarters combat, while Season 5’s new map will be “a forgotten battleground that last saw combat in the Battlefield 4 era”.
