While The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is a beloved book, the upcoming prequel movie will have to make several changes from the original novel to be successful as a film. Written by Suzanne Collins, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes was published in May 2020 and acts as a prequel to The Hunger Games trilogy. The story follows a young Coriolanus Snow during the events of the 10th Hunger Games. Coriolanus is chosen to mentor the female tribute from District 12, Lucy Gray, who manages to impress the Capitol with her bold personality and beautiful voice. With help from Coriolanus, Lucy Gray is able to win the games, but the Capitol decides that Coriolanus' assistance was cheating, so they punish Coriolanus by sending him to District 12 as a peacekeeper.
Lionsgate has been eager to produce a film adaptation of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes since it was announced that Suzanne Collins was working on the project back in 2019. By August 2021, Lionsgate chairman Joe Drake revealed that the film had entered pre-production, and in April 2022, the film was given a November 2023 release date. The cast will include Tom Blyth as Coriolanus Snow, Rachel Zegler as Lucy Gray, and Peter Dinklage as Casca Highbottom.
