Space is full of asteroids, comets, and meteoroids and many have been classified as Near-Earth Objects (NEOs). These objects often get attracted towards Earth due to its gravitational pull or if the planet comes in their trajectory. Now, NASA has raised an alert about 6 giant asteroids that are hurtling towards Earth at mind numbing speeds which will come very close to the planet next week. NASA has informed about their size, speed, how dangerous they are, and more.
The 230-foot asteroid named 2021 TL will be making its closest Earth approach on January 9, 2023, at a distance of 5450000 kilometers, according to the information provided by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). The airplane-sized asteroid is also moving at a speed of 30420 kilometer per hour (8.45km/sec).
Asteroid 2022 YD5, which is 140 foot huge, will be nearing Earth on January 12, 2023. Rushing at a mind numbing speed of 38340 kilometer per hour (10.65 km/sec), it will make its closest approach to Earth at a distance of 3170000 kilometers.
Asteroid 2022 YZ2 is 260 foot, that is almost the size of a building. It will be making its closest approach to Earth at a distance of 6400000 kilometers on January 12, 2023. The speed of the asteroid as tracked by NASA is 23616 kilometers per hour.
130-foot asteroid named 2022 YS5 will also be nearing Earth at a closest distance of 5970000 kilometers on January 13, 2023. The asteroid will be zooming towards the planet at a speed of 21528 kilometers per hour.
On January 14, 2023, two asteroids namely 2014 LJ and 2022 YH3 will be rushing towards planet Earth at a speed of 12528 kmph and 58644 kmph respectively.
Are these asteroids posing any threat to the planet? Notably, none of the above mentioned asteroids are posing
