Ethan Hawke to Write & Produce The Gunfighter Remake for 20th Century

20th Century Studios is currently developing a remake of, based on the classic 1950 Western movie. Academy Award nominee Ethan Hawke has signed on to pen and produce the upcoming reimagining, which was originally led by legendary actor Gregory Peck.

At the moment, it’s still unclear if Hawke would later on sign on to direct the project, which is currently in early development. In addition, Shelby Gaines is also co-writing the screenplay with Hawke. This serves as the acclaimed actor’s latest creative project, after writing and directing his daughter Maya Hawke in 2023’s Wildcat movie.

“In the original film, Jimmy Ringo is a veteran gunslinger known for being quick on the draw, but his talent inevitably leads to trouble, with others constantly out to challenge him,” reads the original synopsis. “All Ringo wants is to be reunited with his estranged family, but he has to contend with various foes, including the ambitious young sharpshooter Hunt Bromley. As Ringo attempts to reconcile with his wife, Peggy, he finds that he can’t easily shake his violent past.”

The Gunfighter was directed by Henry King from a screenplay written by William Bowers and Williams Sellers. Besides Peck, the film also starred Helen Westcott as Peggy Walsh, Millard Mitchell as Mark, Jean Parker as Molly, Karl Malden as Mac, Skip Homeier as Hunt Bromley, Anthony Ross as Charlie, and more. After more than seven decades, the film still holds a high Tomatometer rating of 94% on Rotten Tomatoes.
