A new indie WWE wrestling game has been announced, complete with turn-based battles and old school wrestlers like Andre the Giant.
After years of badly made tie-ins the new WWE 2K22 game has turned out to be surprisingly decent but it may also prove to be the vanguard of a new wave of genuinely good WWE games. Or at least ones that look like they’re trying to be more than just a quick cash-in.
WrestleQuest is not the sort of game you’d expect the WWE or 2K to make, as not only is it a top-down dungeon crawler with 2D pixel art but its focus is on old school wrestlers like ‘Macho Man’ Randy Savage, Andre the Giant, and Booker T.
It was announced as part of the new Xbox indie showcase on Wednesday night, although it will be released for all formats, including PlayStation and Nintendo Switch.
WrestleQuest is being developed by Mega Cat Studios, who specialise in making retro style games and sometimes even release new titles for old formats, such as the NES and Mega Drive – although that’s not the case in this instance.
Naturally, it’s going to help if you know and care who any of these old wrestlers are, but the 16-bit graphics and turn-based battles seem interesting enough that they might appeal to everyone.
Other games announced during the indie showcase (or at least ones we’ve never heard of before) include tactical role-playing game Lost Eidolons, the escape room inspired Escape Academy, snowboarding game Shredders, and gloomy looking 2D action role-player There Is No Light.
Of particular interest was Flintlock: The Siege Of Dawn, from the Ashen creator A44, and Clash: Artifacts Of Chaos – the latest game from ACE Team, who made last year’s predictably underappreciated The Eternal Cylinder.
