With the release of the new trailer for Stranger Things season 4, fans should expect to see a lot more of the Upside Down. Netflix's monster hit launched with Stranger Things season 1 back in 2016 and has garnered a large fan following. Set in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, in the 1980s, the series centers on a group of teenagers who meet a mysterious young girl named Eleven, played by Millie Bobby Brown, who has telekinetic powers. As they discover Eleven's origins, the teenagers find themselves at the center of a massive government conspiracy in Hawkins.
The draw of the series is primarily centered around its nostalgic tone, which calls back to major 80's hits like E.T., The Goonies, and Close Encounters of the Third Kind.In paying homage to the classics, Stranger Things successfully blends various genres, from horror to supernatural to coming-of-age. The horror elements are a direct result of the government conspiracy, which involves a team of scientists trying to open a portal to another dimension, coined by the teenagers as the Upside Down. This alternate universe is a direct inverse of reality and can only be accessed through specific means.
