Gearbox and Hopoo Games announced Risk of Rain Returns, a remake of the original 2013 Risk of Rain game, for release on PC and Nintendo Switch in 2023. It will be built from the ground up to have enhanced visuals and new content.
“Risk of Rain Returns takes everything we learned making Risk of Rain 2 and applies it to the original we created back in our dorm room,” says Hopoo Games co-founder Duncan Drummond in a statement. “As we chart our future as developers, it was important to us that we look back on our early work. Risk of Rain Returns is a small token of our appreciation to this incredible community. We hope everyone is as excited about the future as we are.”
Risk of Rain Returns has an updated codebase and the developers will implement features and lessons that they learned from creating Risk of Rain 2. The game will also have revamped multiplayer, as well as new Survivors, Survivor abilities, items, and monsters. Chris Christodoulou returns to score the game’s soundtrack as well.
Gearbox fully acquired the Risk of Rain franchise last month. Chucklefish published the original Risk of Rain and Gearbox published Risk of Rain 2 in 2020.
In IGN’s Risk of Rain 2 review, we said, “What’s here now is polished, fun, and immensely replayable, and what’s on the horizon leads me to believe I’ll be playing Risk of Rain 2 for a very long time to come.”
