At its Samsung Developer Conference (SDC) this week, the company showed off(Opens in a new window) an updated version of its One UI mobile OS, coming soon to Galaxy S22 phones.
One UI 5 is Samsung's version of Android 13, and it'll feature custom-built Modes and Routines and a Dynamic Lockscreen for phones, the Galaxy Watch, and other One UI 5 devices.
Samsung is still trying to make its Bixby voice assistant happen, so One UI 5 adds a new Bixby Text Call feature, which will "answer calls on your behalf and share typed messages with the caller, speaking aloud as if you had answered," Samsung says.
There will also be an expanded Color Palette feature, smoother animations and transitions, Stacked Widgets, and different call backgrounds for individual contacts, SamMobile reports(Opens in a new window).
Speaking of Samsung's voice assistant, Bixby Home Studio will let developers build Bixby experiences for the SmartThings smart home platform. Bixby will also add support for Latin American Spanish, starting in November, Samsung says.
On the security front, Samsung teased Knox Matrix(Opens in a new window), a private blockchain-based platform that lets branded devices (Galaxy devices, TVs, home appliances) work together to form a "shield" to protect the entire network. Users, meanwhile, can customize personal privacy settings with the Security and Privacy Dashboard, which scans for vulnerabilities, recommends security updates, and provides data management options.
Samsung also announced that its Tizen OS will support NFTs, while its free, ad-supported Samsung TV Plus streaming platform will get 8K video on demand courtesy of a partnership with Lionsgate and Vice Media.
