The return of Wii Sports and Mario Strikers Battle League Football were just two of the new games unveiled in the latest Nintendo Direct.
In all honesty, the biggest news to come from Wednesday’s Nintendo Direct livestream was the fact that the sequel to Zelda: Breath Of The Wild wasn’t mentioned, but if you ignore that disappointment there was a lot of other interesting news.
The new Mario Kart 8 paid-for DLC was probably the biggest overall announcement but the 40 minute showcase opened with Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes, a new Dynasty Warriors style game set in the same universe as Fire Emblem: Three Houses.
There wasn’t much info on any of the games in the Direct, as while Splatoon 3 was confirmed for summer 2022 the only thing that was shown was the new version of (excellent) co-op mode Salmon Run. Although we got the impression there’ll be a dedicated Direct for the game later on.
One of the other brand new games was (as predicted by one of our readers in the Inbox) a third Mario Strikers game, with the clumsily titled Mario Strikers: Battle League Football due out on June 10.
Even for a Mario sports game, its resemblance to real football was pretty tenuous but the previous games have always been reasonably popular. The first two were made by Luigi’s Mansion developer Next Level Games, who Nintendo now owns, but it’s not yet clear whether they’re making this one or not.
Strategy remake Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp was given a new release date of April 8, after being delayed last year, and the previously rumoured Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition remaster will be out a day earlier on April 7.
