Ability Stones are introduced alongside Tier 1 Armor at level 50, and they're essentially the way that players exert more control over what exact Engravings they want to max out and when. Not only that, but each jump to the next Item Level Ability Stone usually also has a large stat increase in overall Vitality.
There are Rare, Epic, Legendary, and even Relic-grade Ability Stones at a bunch of different level markers across all three tiers, and the main difference between the rarities is how many nodes they have for each of the three lines.
