The YouTube TV app now supports picture-in-picture (PiP) mode on iPhones and iPads running iOS 15 and above. The development comes almost a year after the main YouTube app on iOS started testing the PiP mode with YouTube Premium subscribers. Interestingly, Google says it will eventually roll out the feature for everybody on iOS, even without a YouTube Premium subscription, although there's no word on when that might happen.
Picture-in-picture is a popular feature for video apps on smartphones, as it allows users to keep watching videos even when they navigate away from the app. YouTube TV got picture-in-picture support on Android back in 2017, when Android 8.0 Oreo added native PiP support for compatible apps. The main YouTube app had added PiP support on Android even earlier, as did Netflix, VLC, Chrome, and Facebook.

Using the PiP mode on YouTube TV is fairly easy on an iPhone or iPad. To do that, first update the app to the latest available version from the App Store. Now start watching a video and then swipe up from the bottom of the screen to return to the device's homepage. This will close the app itself, although the video window will remain open and the clip will continue to play as usual. Users will now be able to scale down the size of the video to suit their needs and it can also be moved to any part of the screen. The video window will also have the standard play/pause and rewind/forward controls that can be tapped to control playback. There will also be a button on the mini window to return to the full-screen application, as well as a button to close the video window for good.
