The Snapchat+ subscription service brings a number of exclusive features for Snapchat users, and it can be easily subscribed to from the app. Launched in late June, Snapchat+ costs $3.99 per month and offers the ability to change the app icon, see who re-watched a story, pin a friend to the top of the chat history as a 'BFF,' see the location history of friends in the past 24 hours, among other things. The service is available in only a handful of countries to start with, but the company says it plans to expand it to more markets in the future.
Snapchat originally debuted as an ephemeral messaging app in 2011 before reinventing itself as a full-fledged social media platform with a huge fan following among young users. With the new subscription service, the company hopes that it will be able to monetize the ardent following it already has among its user base. It would also help the company diversify its revenue source that is currently almost entirely dependent on ads. While Snapchat also has a fledgling hardware business that includes the Spactacles smart glasses and the Pixy drone, they make a negligible contribution to the company's bottom line for the most part.
