In every piece of media - whether it be games, film, television, or books - there comes a time when the original protagonist needs to step aside and allow a new generation to come forward. Storytelling often focuses on the hero’s journey, a character arc with a distinct beginning, middle, and end that needs to come to a close eventually or risk growing stale. You can only iterate upon a single personality for so long, and I feel the greatest art in my lifetime has perfectly understood that notion.
