Sony Pictures CEO Tony Vinciquerra has opened up about the company’s, saying that it might be time they rethink how to approach the films amidst Kraven the Hunter‘s box office performance.

Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, Vinciquerra was asked whether or not he believes the strategy of the Spider-man universe films needs to be rethought.

The CEO acknowledged they did, calling the universe “snake-bitten” and saying that, no matter if a movie is good or bad now, it will be mocked. “I do think we need to rethink it, just because it’s snake-bitten,” said Vinciquerra. “If we put another one out, it’s going to get destroyed, no matter how good or bad it is.” The CEO also touched on the poor performances of both Madame Web and Kraven the Hunter, two Spider-Man adjacent films that were received poorly critically and from audiences.

According to Vinciquerra, the film’s themselves weren’t bad, but the bad press reaction to both is what led many away from them. “Let’s just touch on Madame Web for a moment.

Madame Web underperformed in the theaters because the press just crucified it,” Vinciquerra said. “It was not a bad film, and it did great on Netflix.
