The film franchise has reached a major milestone, with Paramount Pictures announcing that the Sega adaptations have officially crossed the $1 billion mark at the box office.
The franchise surpassing the $1 billion mark comes with from its total box office receipts worldwide. Sonic the Hedgehog and its sequel, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, combined to earn $725.2 million at the global box office. The third entry in the film series, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, was released in theaters last month and has been a success as well.
The third film has earned over $312 million globally to date, and continues to grow. The film opened to #1 at the domestic box office, and also had its biggest international opening of the franchise shortly after.
“Sonic the Hedgehog returns to the big screen this holiday season in his most thrilling adventure yet. Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails reunite against a powerful new adversary, Shadow, a mysterious villain with powers unlike anything they have faced before,” the synopsis for the movie reads. “With their abilities outmatched in every way, Team Sonic must seek out an unlikely alliance in hopes of stopping Shadow and protecting the planet.”
Ben Schwartz returns to play Sonic the Hedgehog in the new movie, while the voice cast also includes Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Miles “Tails” Prower, Idris Elba as Knuckles the Echidna, and Keanu Reeves as Shadow the Hedgehog. James Marsden will reprise his role as Tom Wachowski. The live-action cast also features Tika Sumpter, Krysten Ritter, Natasha Rothwell, Cristo Fernández, Alyla Browne, and more.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is out now in theaters.
