Ahead of Sonic 3’s release, a Sonic 4 movie has been greenlit

Paramount Pictures has reportedly greenlit a fourth Sonic the Hedgehog movie, ahead of Sonic 3’s arrival in cinemas this weekend.

According to Variety, Sonic 4 is in the planning stages and is anticipated to release in spring 2027. No plot details were shared.

The first two Sonic movies have enjoyed box office success for Paramount and Sega, earning a combined $725.2 million, plus $180 million more in home entertainment rentals and digital purchases. A spinoff Paramount+ series, Knuckles, was also released earlier this year.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which releases on Friday, is reportedly expected to top the North American box office with $55 million to $60 million from 3,800 theaters. The movie has been well received by critics, with an 87% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes.

All three Sonic movies were directed by Jeff Fowler, starring Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, and Ben Schwartz as Sonic.

Speaking to VGC in October, Sega’s transmedia boss Justin Scarpone said he has big ambitions for Sega’s future as an entertainment company and revealed he plans to open an official Sega store in Tokyo, Japan.

“The strategy is to turn us into an entertainment company with games as our core pillar business, just as Disney would say films are,” Scarpone said.

“We want to be in the position where it’s OK if there are people who love some of our IP who have never played a game, but have seen all of our films, been to our live shows, been to our attractions, or bought our merchandise.”
