Dynasty Warriors: Origins Could Only be Made on Current-Gen Hardware, Developer Says

Dynasty Warriors: Origins isn’t going for the open-ended approach of Dynasty Warriors 9, while developer Omega Force has also described as a back-to-the-basics experience with its renewed focus on tactical action– but that doesn’t mean it’s going to compromise on scale. Koei Tecmo and Omega Force’s action series has always been known for pitting large numbers of on-screen enemies at once, and as per series producer Tomkohiko Sho, the scale that the upcoming Origins achieves on that front is only possible because of current-gen hardware.

Speaking in a recent interview with The Gamer, Sho said, “Origins is something that can only be made in this day and age. The sense of the battlefield is one of the concepts from the early days. And now, with the current generation of consoles and PCs, we’re really able to explore this.”

Of course, having players fight against thousands upon thousands of enemies, all of them on-screen at the same time, would have been no easy task for Omega Force’s programmers, but Sho said that the development team was ultimately able to achieve what it set out to do.

“The programmers had a hard time,” he said. “The programmers on our team wanted to show at least 10,000 soldiers on the screen. That was also their ambition. It was probably difficult for them to do that, but they really worked hard, and I think you can see that with how it appears on the screen.”

“With the PlayStation 2, we weren’t able to do what we wanted to because of the limitations of technology,” he added. “But as things have progressed, with the PlayStation 3, 4, and 5, we’ve been able to implement more of what we initially wanted to put in.”

Dynasty Warriors: Origins launches on January 17 next year for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
