Last month, Wicked: Part Two officially received the new title of Director Jon M. Chu believes changing the title to reflect a phrase in the script was the right decision.
“Who wants a movie called Wicked: Part Two?” Chu said at the National Board of Review Awards. “On the script, it always said, ‘For Good,’ and so it was just a point of like, ‘Do we really want to call this Part Two?’ And nobody wants that.”
For Good refers to the penultimate song performed in the second act by Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (Ariana Grande). According to Chu, For Good was the only title considered for Part Two.
“I mean, that’s the destination,” Chu added. “For Good, we know, is like, ‘Where are we going with this movie? Let’s finish this thing.'”
Wicked: For Good is the second entry in the two-part film adaptation of the Tony Award-winning stage musical. Chu directs the sequel from a screenplay by Dana Fox and Winnie Holzman. Marc Platt and David Stone will produce.
Besides Erivo and Grande, Wicked: For Good’s ensemble includes Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero Tigelaar, Ethan Slater as Boq Woodsman, Bowen Yang as Pfannee, Peter Dinklage as the voice of Dr. Dillamond, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, and Jeff Goldblum as The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
Wicked: Part Two will continue the story of the witches of Oz. In the wake of the final moments of Part One, Galinda is now dubbed Glinda the Good, while Elphaba is called the Wicked Witch of the West.
Wicked has been a smash hit for Universal. The $112.5 million domestic opening is now the largest ever for a film based on a Broadway musical. Wicked has grossed over $682 million worldwide against a $150 million budget.
Wicked: For Good opens in theaters on November 21, 2025.
