Sony and Black Bear's GameStop doc, Dumb Money, just expanded its cast with the additions of Vincent D'Onofrio, Anthony Ramos, and Dane DeHaan Deadline reports. They join Paul Dano, Seth Rogen, Sebastian Stan, and Pete Davidson, with Craig Gillespie (Cruella, I, Tonya) directing.
The film tells the story of fortunes won and lost practically overnight in the GameStop stock short squeeze that occurred last year. It was such big news that even WWE wrote a gimmick for a character around it. What happened was that GameStop's share price exploded due in part to investors on Reddit's Wall Street Bets subreddit and other forums taking aim at the institutional investors who were «shorting» the stock based simply on a joke. Similar movies were made about this financial maneuver, including The Big Short, which focused on the stock market crash in 2008.
The movie is based on Ben Mezrich's book, The Antisocial Network. Mezrich's work has been used as the foundation for a handful of successful adaptations. His previous work Bringing Down The House was adapted for the 2008 drama 21 starring Kevin Spacey, Jim Sturgess, and Laurence Fishburne. His most notable book, The Accidental Billionaires, told the story of the founding of Facebook and eventually won three Oscars, one being for Best Adapted Screenplay.
If you're not familiar with Ramos, he's probably best known for his performance in the Tony-winning Broadway musical and pop culture sensation, Hamilton, playing both John Laurens and the tragic Philip Hamilton. He's been making his transition to film steadily and was most recently seen in Jon Chu's In the Heights, another Broadway adaptation.
