Sony's Investment In FromSoftware Could Lead To Projects Other Than Games

Sony is keen on bringing its video games to a larger audience by adapting them as movies and TV shows. Now, it might also start doing that for titles published by studios that it doesn’t fully own.

In a recent interview with Reuters, SIE Worldwide Studios Head Hermen Hulst said, “You should think of collaborations on the game development side first and foremost, but it's also not unthinkable with our PlayStation Productions efforts that we explore opportunities,". This comes at a time when Sony and Tencent jointly acquired a 30 percent stake in FromSoftware. While the acquisition looked like a strategic investment, this statement means that Sony has bigger plans for its partnership with the Elden Ring and Dark Souls developer.

Recently, Sony has doubled down on expanding the horizons of its IPs beyond the realm of video games. One of the reasons behind this could be the success of the Uncharted movie, which is now the fifth highest-grossing video game movie of all time with a $400 million global box-office haul. Since then, we have heard reports that a Horizon TV show is in the works at Netflix, whereas Amazon Prime Video is pitching for a God of War series.

Currently, the biggest confirmed projects in development are The Last of Us series, Twisted Metal show, and a Gran Turismo movie. The Last of Us HBO also recently got its first trailer that was hailed by fans for staying true to the video game. The Gran Turismo movie has also begun production, with David Harbour and Orlando Bloom as a part of the cast. The Twisted Metal show is also arriving soon on NBC’s Peacock, starring Anthony Mackie and Neve Campbell.
