Kojima confirms Death Stranding movie is in the works

A Death Stranding movie is in the works, it’s been announced.

Director Hideo Kojima has partnered with executive producer Alex Lebovici’s Hammerstone Studios to produce the adaptation, the game designer said on Thursday.

As reported by Deadline, the film is fully financed by Hammerstone and will be produced by Kojima and Lebovici via their respective banners, with Kojima Productions US and Allan Ungar serving as executive producers.

“I couldn’t be more excited about this new partnership with Hammerstone Studios,” said Kojima. “This is a pivotal moment for the franchise and I’m really looking forward to collaborating with them in bringing Death Stranding to the big screen.

Lebovici added: “We are thrilled and honored to have the opportunity to partner with brilliant and iconic Hideo Kojima on his first film adaptation.

“Unlike other big-budget tentpole video game adaptations, this will be something far more intimate and grounded. Our goal is to redefine what a video game adaptation could be when you have creative and artistic freedom. This film will be an authentic ‘Hideo Kojima’ production.”

Death Stranding was released for PS4 in 2019. Starring Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, Léa Seydoux, Guillermo del Toro and Margaret Qualley, it’s unclear if any of these actors will return for the film adaptation.

The first trailer for Death Stranding 2 was shown at The Game Awards last week, which was attended by Kojima.

The trailer for the sequel, which will be published by Sony, stars Léa Seydoux, who played the character Fragile in the first game.

It also confirms that Norman Reedus will be returning, and notes that Troy Baker will also star.
