Miramax has officially tapped Indonesian filmmaker Timo Tjahjanto to direct the upcoming, which serves as a sequel to 2024’s action thriller movie starring Jason Statham. The latter is expected to reprise his role as Adam Clay, who was introduced in the first installment as a retired clandestine human intelligence operative.
Tjahjanto is no stranger to the action genre, as he previously directing Indonesian action movies such as 2016’s Headshot, 2018’s The Night Comes for Us, 2022’s The Big 4, and last year’s The Shadow Strays. Before The Beekeeper 2, he recently directed the upcoming Bob Odenkirk movie Nobody 2, which is a sequel to the 2021 action thriller. This marks Tjahjanto’s first major Hollywood feature, which is slated to arrive in theaters on August 15, 2025.
Miramax is currently planning to start production on The Beekeeper 2 this coming fall, after more than a year since the first movie had its theatrical release. Tjahjanto will be directing from screenplay written by Kurt Wimmer. David Ayer, who directed the 2024 movie, might also return as a producer. Meanwhile, Miramax is reportedly looking to have another partnership with Amazon MGM Studios for the sequel’s domestic rights.
The first movie also starred Emmy Raver-Lampman, Josh Hutcherson, Bobby Naderi, Minnie Driver, Phylicia Rashad, and Jeremy Irons. It centered around Statham’s Adam as he seeks revenge for the death of his friend and kind-hearted landlady, who fell victim to a massive phishing scam. Since its debut, the film received generally positive reviews from critics and audiences alike. It currently holds a Popcornmeter rating of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes.
