The U.S. automotive manufacturer, Ford, and the security giant, ADT, are forming a joint venture to improve security of unattended vehicles. In recent times, car theft has become more prominent, especially in tourist destinations. San Francisco, for example, is reportedly becoming so overrun with thieves that car owners are going to extreme lengths to protect their car windows from being smashed, including leaving them unlocked.
The increase in car theft comes at a time when there is more technology inside cars than ever before — sometimes to a fault. The new tech includes everything from processors to sensors and cameras. These devices can be used for simple operations, like a backup camera or navigation functions, all the way up to self-driving capabilities. However, both companies and consumers are realizing that the tech inside the average car is similar to the best smart security systems on the market. That's offering a new use case for the cameras and sensors on modern vehicles — monitored surveillance while a car owner is away from their vehicles.

ADT and Ford have formed a joint venture called Canopy to provide smart surveillance services in vehicles, ADT announced in a press release. The new company will combine the security monitoring services offered by ADT with the AI-based camera tech inside modern Ford cars. Though the U.S. automaker does have a strong offering of electric vehicles, the Canopy features won't be exclusive to EVs. Ford says that the first cars and trucks with the surveillance tech will be released early next year.
