Sony has announced that the classic PlayStation, PS2, PS3 and PS4 themes that were available for PS5 players will stop being usable.
The company announced through a post on social media platform X, however, that the positive response to these themes has led Sony to look into bringing them back. “Thank you for the fantastic response to the classic PlayStation, PS2, PS3, and PS4 limited-time console themes, which will be leaving tomorrow,” posted Sony. “Due to the positive response on these 4 themes, we’re doing some work behind the scenes to bring these special designs back in the months ahead.” The company has also stated that there are currently no plans to make more themes in the future.
For context, these themes were originally introduced with the intent of celebrating the 30th anniversary of PlayStation. Through these themes, Sony wanted fans of classic PlayStation, as well as newer players to re-experience the sights and sounds of the classic consoles.
These themes have been available since December 3. As part of these celebrations, Sony also released an original PlayStation-themed PS5 back in November, complete with the classic grey shade.
The PS5 was available in Pro and Digital Edition, with quantities being quite limited. Peripherals in the theme were also available, including DualSense controllers, the PlayStation Portal, and the PlayStation VR2.
